“The Mole Speaks”

From next season the fine for cautions goes up from the present £8 to £10. This is voted in by The FA council and is effective nationwide. Maybe the players will start to learn!!

Congratulations to Gary Suggate who competed in his first ever marathon at the London event. He ran the 26.1 miles in a remarkable 2hrs 57mins and 15sec. A great time for someone running this distance for the first time.

How about the following two stories? Alan Webster was refereeing a game where he had two neutral assistants, fortunately. He stopped his watch for a substitute and, guess what? He forgot to restart it. Apparently the game is still carrying on! Also heard than Alan showed a young lad a red card as a joke and the poor lad started to cry.  What a bully!!

            Eagle eyed
Larry Cousins was entering the ground at Truro City when, he mentioned to his companion about the rather attractive legs on a ‘female’ spectator sat on the wall.  As this team of officials entered into the ground and came closer to the spectator it became apparent that rather than being a female it was a gentlemen who obviously preferred to wear ladies clothes! To each their own goes the saying!  There is no truth in the rumour that the lads with Larry then requested separate changing rooms!!

You certainly cannot knock Fred Saunders commitment to local refereeing and our local game.. Take this weekend of the 10th/11th April for example.

First it’s the thanksgiving service for Maureen Pearce (the late wife of Brian) at Tawstock at 12.00 noon. Then its off to Torrington to referee the Torrington Admirals v Anchor game before heading of to Ilfacombe to assist off the pitch with the Arlington cup final before getting home in time for Match of the Day. Then on Sunday (11th) it’s in the middle of a Vets match before picking up the flag to do the Assistant job in the Wrey Arms Sunday league division 1 Final at Mill Road. All that with a dodgy knee amongst other things!!

Have you noticed the Match officials for the Arlington cup final? Referee is Peter Sercombe and his assistants are Ian Hart and Mickey Angell. Maybe this cup should be renamed the Oldington cup!! The ages of these three gentlemen added together could well exceed the total age of all the players in the game.

Noticed that at the recent championship game between Plymouth Argyle and Bristol City, which took place on Tuesday 16th March the two assistants were Andy Bennett and Brett Huxtable, our two top local officials. Think this is the first time these two have been together at a football league game!. Poor old referee is all I can say

Two of our local referees recently took part in the Bideford Half-marathon. Experienced old campaigner Andy Walter along with young up-start Gary Suggate completed the 13.1 miles from Bideford to Torrington and return. One did it in a time of just over 1hr 47 mins and the other in a very good 1hr 21mins. I will leave it up to you to sort out which did which

Whilst on this sort of subject, level 7 ref Gary Suggate has some more arduous events to come this year. In April he will be taken part in the London Marathon and then in July plans to cycle from John O’Goats to Lands End. Oh, to be young and fit.

Our own level 2 ref Andy Bennett has hit the big time. The referee of the Bristol R v Stockport  County game on Tuesday 2nd March picked up an injury and though he managed to reach half time he was not fit enough to carry on. Since Benny was senior Assistant he had to take up the whistle and took charge of the 2nd half. In his own words ‘it was awesome’!!

It got a bit missed when it happened but top local ref Brett Huxtable got engaged at Christmas. Congratulations to Brett and his Fiancée who happens to be former Football League Assistant referee Nigel Cockwill’s daughter.

Congratulations to the Wrey Arms Sunday League who, for the first time this season have decided that instead of providing their cup final officials with medals, match fee etc, will be providing a complete free match kit to the referee and assistants.  This league has recently been leading the charge in looking after their officials. This league was the first, a few seasons ago, to raise the match fees to £20. Where some lead others follow.

This season it continues to be the case that we have more referees in the north then we have games available. Up until about a season ago it was more a case of some games each Saturday going un- covered. However now the Appointments Secretary has a different problem in that some referees’ are not getting games every Saturday.  There is even a case of a newish referee got getting an appointment at all this month (March). Somehow I think this problem could continue since I understand that there are already a good number of enquires about the next referees training course including two former local referees looking to take the whistle up again. All referees might have to start to be prepared to have the odd spare Saturday off.

Referees Match Report forms

As a result of an initiative by the North Devon Journal League, and following discussions between the league and our local RA branch, the good news is that the league will be introducing a Referees Match Report Form from next season 2010-11.

It will operate, initially, only in the Premier division before being rolled out across the league the following season 2011-12. All referees officiating at a Premier game will be expected to complete and return the form, either by post or email, to the League secretary within 5 days of the match. Copies of the form will be circulated to all referees before the start of the new season. A copy of the form will, hopefully, appear on this website sometime soon!

Clubs will be marked out of a 100. This mark is to be based on the teams/players general conduct on the field of play taking into consideration foul play, dissent, cautions and sending offs etc and any events immediately before or after the game. Any mark below 50 will require a letter of support for this mark to be sent to the league.

The clubs will also be marked separately on the referees changing facilities, conduct of club officials and assistants, and the home team will also be marked on their administration. This will consider such things as notification of game, receiving team sheet and payment of match fee etc.

RA Subs due

NDRA Branch sub are due from 1st April. They are £20 for all existing members or any referee joining, if paid before 31st May and £24 thereafter. For newly qualified level 7 referees, joining for the 1st time, it costs only £9.

Cheques should be made payable to ‘North Devon Referees Association’ and sent to NDRA branch treasurer

Early season reminder for all local referees

All referees are reminder of the new changes introduced to the North Devon Gazette League team sheets for this new season. The first is that you will notice an extra column has been inserted next to the players’ names with the title ‘Card’. This is for the match referee to indicate what disciplinary action, if any, is taken against particular players. This is not for the clubs to fill in. The second change is for the referee to insert the mileage he is claiming within his match fee.

To see the new team sheets with the new areas highlighted visit the ‘Local News and Information’ page on this website.
