Syllabus for Basic Referee Training

The First Step

You need to register an interest in taking a course with the North Area Training Officer (Andy Walter) and with the Devon County FA (DCFA). You will then receive an application form and questionnaire from the County FA which will need completing and returning, along with the course fee. Once that is done and it is confirmed that a course will be running and a date set, you will receive a Pre-Course Study Pack from the CFA. This will contain a DVD on “Learn the Laws”, an A4 study document and a Laws of Association Football booklet. You should receive this in good time for the recommended 10 hours of study. You should try to learn the Laws in order to take an assessment of knowledge during the Introductory session.

Module 1 – Introductory Session (Monday 3rd November 2008)

This will be a 2.5 hour introduction evening which will include a Knowledge of Law Assessment and completing a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Form (where appropriate).

Module 2 – Application of Law (Monday 17th November to Monday 8th December)

This will consist of 15 hours instruction on the practical application of the laws of the game and on refereeing techniques. It will also include a ‘Safeguarding Children’ workshop. (Monday 10th November)

Module 3 - Examination (Monday 8th December 2008)

A 1.5 hr examination will then be held. Passing this and completing the following 2 modules will mean you can register as a level 9 Trainee Referee.

Module 4 – Match Experience (November 2008—March 2009)

You referee a minimum of 6 11 v 11 games. These can be started once you have commenced module 2. Of these 6 games at least 2 should be watched by a referee mentor.

Module 5 – Next Step Workshop (March 2009)

Having refereed at least 6 games the final step is to attend a 2/3 hour workshop. You will then receive an FA Certificate of Qualification and register with the DCFA as a level 7 (level 8 if under 16) fully qualified referee
